The history of sinful Swedish pornography
Organizer:
Klara Arnberg
Klara Arnberg has a talk in English about the history of sinful Swedish pornography.
In the late 1950s the Swedish sin was a common topic in the foreign press, starting out with the famous article “Sin & Sweden” in Time 1955. At the same time the pornographic press grew stronger in Sweden and movies with Swedish summer landscapes and naked blonde women became popular internationally. Both in the debate that followed in the 1960s and1970s about pornography and in the pornographic press references to Swedish sinfulness were obvious. The export of pornography to other countries was said to spread Sweden’s bad reputation even further and a kind of sex tourism was said to be flourishing in Stockholm where foreigners could buy literature and watch movies censored in their home countries. In this lecture, Klara Arnberg who is writing a thesis about the pornographic press history in Sweden, will guide you through the Swedish history of pornography and discuss how different sexualities and sexual practices were constructed in terms of sin both in the debate and in the magazines.
