RFSL starts collection at EuroPride, in support to the LGBT movement in Uganda
On Friday LGBT people were once again imprisoned in Uganda. Once again the imprisoned were subject to torture, to reveal names of other LGBT people. Tonight Stockholm EuroPride opens up for RFSL’s collection to support the LGBT movement in Uganda.
It is Uganda’s president who has expressed threats of violence and execution for the country’s LGBT people, and this started these persecutions. Uganda is a country that systematically persecutes, imprisones and tortures LGBT people.
- Many countries, such as Ugande, lacks human rights for their LGBT population, rights that we consider a matter of course in Sweden. In many countries, LGBT people has to hide to escape harassments from the authorities, why tonight’s collection is important but in Uganda it might even make the difference between life or death, says Sören Juvas, president of RFSL.
- RFSL made us aware of this acute situation in Uganda. It’s natural for us in such a situation open up for a collection for this specifik purpose. With this year’s theme, “Swedish Sin, Breaking Borders” we want to focus on the situation for LGBT people in other countries, says Jonah Nylund, chairperson of Stockholm Pride.
The collection in Pride Park tonight will go directly to support Uganda’s LGBT movement, and will take place between 6.30pm-8pm.
